On Being Nucking Futs

October 22nd, 2008 2 comments

Let’s take a break from politics and talk about health.

In particular, emotional and spiritual health. DJ as usual brings up a good topic about the connection between emotional maturity and spiritual maturity. This hits close to home for me as a recovering depression(ist) with a melancholic disposition. I’ve been known to have several “down” episodes in my life – and I’ve hated those periods. It was the worst feeling in the world, to be depressed, even more worse than nausea or being sick. I never treated these episodes with pharmaceuticals or anti-depressants and have always felt I was better off w/o. But while dark, oh the lessons I learned in these places… and one of which Read more…

Initiative 1000 – Death With Dignity?

October 21st, 2008 2 comments

Big in WA state right now is the convo on physician-assisted suicide.

It’s kind of amazing that I live in a state now that is actually considering the legalized suicide thing; I believe OR is the only state to have approved this and no wonder; we share a border with them. Still; I know we’re progressive and all, but is WA ready for Initiative 1000? Read more…

Kirk Cameron Is My Hero in Bellingham

It’s Time To Say “I Do” To Fireproof

Was surprised to see that Kirk Cameron made the Cascadia Weekly for his new feature: Fireproof @ the Regal Sunset. The brief synopsis: Kirk is a fireman. But his marriage is going up in flames. He takes a 40 days of purpose thingy. Probably saves his marriage in the end. There’s no hiding the subtle Christian overtones to this movie’s message, and the Cascadia was surprisingly tame in its review. The one star probably spoke enough damage to the movie. But it must definitely be a stirring challenge for many to fix our marriages in 40 days. I dunno. I don’t intend to watch it. Has anyone seen it? Intend to see it? Is it more star-worthy than the Cascadia gives it credit?

Oppression of the Balloon People; Thoughts on Privilege

October 17th, 2008 2 comments

Today I participated in the systemic oppression of the balloon people.

It was thru a little exercise w/my cohort @ Leadership Whatcom – and it was quite an experience to be the most-privileged, richest, elitist class of society in the room – albeit through roleplay. It awakened me to my own privilege, in terms of class, economically, socially. And while I’ve taken the victims’ stance many times a past, and complained of the oppressiveness under the privileged, it was surreal to have the tables turned – and I realized that I was complicit as well. America is complicit today when it comes to privilege in a global sense. Not to say we ought to be ashamed, but to face the reality that when our market crashes, so does the rest of the world. How can anyone say anymore that we don’t hold economic power over others? At any rate,

what are your thoughts on privilege, beit economic, gender, sexual orientation, race?

Pat Robertson on Obama: He Supports Infanticide

October 17th, 2008 25 comments

I’m not a regular follower of the 700 Club nor Focus on the Family.

But it happened to be on the radio as I was flipping thru on the way back from the gym tonight and it was one of those things where in my mind I’m saying “change the station change the station” but I couldn’t. It was like there was a hypnotic draw to Robertson’s placating voice. He was interviewing a gal who was almost aborted and yet is alive today, alive and kicking to fight the evils of the Democratic platform and evangelize the message of McCain. It was interesting to say the least. Here’s a gal who literally owes her life to the pro-life cause. Certainly very convincing. And yet, I’m not convinced (yet?). Is there more to this story?

How do you respond to the charge that Obama supports infanticide?

VA Tech Tragedy Hits Close To Home…

April 16th, 2007 2 comments

Edit:

Even closer to home now as we discover the killer’s identity to be Korean-American. Safe to say it is disturbing enough as it is. We will need to talk about this.

At Catalyst this week I think I’m going to need to talk about this and we are planning on having a small vigil.

Chipping Away…

Our next major life transition takes place within the next three months.

After leaving NYC, I moved to Seattle to work with YWAM. And now, 7 good years later, I (along w/wife and …?) have finished our commitment with YWAM and are moving on (still in Washington) to church planting in a great little town called Bellingham, quietly tucked away between Seattle and Vancouver. But it won’t be quiet for long. Bellingham is growing in commerce, diversity, population, real estate…

I would say our first “exploratory” meeting went great. A good turnout of people from varied backgrounds, ethnicities and generations. It was a pleasure to see this mix.

Growing Pains…

My dad was an entrepreneur.

And he was a darn good one at that. At 70 (and still not retired) he took his telecommunications skills learned from the Korean Army, honed them in Iran where he furthered his skills with the army, served as a civilian army telecommunications engineer in Vietnam and moved to New York to start his own telecom business in the 70′s. He didn’t hit it big nationally, but locally he was big time in New York with an “A” list of clients. And you know what they say, “If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere”. Read more…
