10 People I’d Like to Meet in the Next 10

Accompanied by one question I’d ask each. Apologies; yes I know this is yet another top-ten for the new decade ahead, but for me it helps as trajectory-setting. Also; networking / relationship is a life-long work-in-progress and so likewise I feel no compulsion to finish this post, nor the pressing questions I would ask. All I know is that I have been influenced, and hope to continue to be, by these folks. Alphabetized, by last name:

  1. James Cone: Is he still teaching @ Union? The author of A Black Theology of Liberation, he is the only dude who has taught the classical philosophies and theologies while sporting a huge ‘fro. QUESTION:
  2. Makoto Fujimura: Fujimura is an artist and New Yorker whose work managed to capture some of the angst of the post 9/11 incident. His approach to art seems to be the redemption of abstract expressionism. QUESTION:
  3. Tim Keller, senior (and planting) pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian; I’ve heard it said that he is the C.S. Lewis of our time. Although away from home I’ve emulated his sermons and most recently found myself deeply moved in-flight listening to his teaching on Jesus asleep in the storm. QUESTION:
  4. Carmen Van Kerckhove is co-founder and president of New Demographic, a diversity education firm. Her perspectives on race and diversity have been featured on CNN, MSNBC, NPR, USA Today, and The New York Times. She’s the OG antiracistparent. QUESTION:
  5. Michael Luo, national correspondent for the new york times, covering kitchen table economics, writing human stories abt the recession. QUESTION:
  6. Pete Scazzero, pastor of New Life Church on Queens Blvd. I grew up reading his study materials and hearing a lot about him on the radio; today it appears that his life has intersected w/ monastic forms of spirituality which resonates with me greatly. QUESTION:
  7. Phyllis Trible: Not even sure if she is still alive. She was one time @ Union as well. I don’t know if she would call herself evangelical, but has surely paved the way for a feminist hermeneutic of the Bible. QUESTION:
  8. Jon Tyson. Ok. C’mon. How does an Aussie from down under by way of a trailer park in Texas successfully plant a flourishing church in NYC? QUESTION: Ok. C’mon. How does an Aussie from down under by way of a trailer park in Texas successfully plant a flourishing church in NYC?

    @elderj
    forgive my name-dropping. There’s slots open there @ 9 & 10 :) And these folks are almost all local to NYC anyhow… I’m gonna have to make another national list for myself of which you’re on it !
